A Guide for Life – Day 2 – Start Your Day with Purity: The Sunnah of Cleanliness

From the moment we awaken, Islam teaches us that physical and spiritual purity are the starting point of a meaningful day. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized cleanliness not as a custom of culture, but as a foundational act of faith.

Cleanliness in Islam is not limited to ritual washing — it is a constant state of awareness, self-respect, and reverence toward the One who created us.

📖 The Qur’an: Purity is Loved by Allah

"Indeed, Allah loves those who constantly repent and those who purify themselves."
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ وَيُحِبُّ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222

This verse shows that cleanliness is not merely a hygiene practice — it is a beloved action in the sight of Allah. It includes both inner purification (repentance) and outer cleanliness (body, clothes, surroundings).

🕋 The Sunnah: Entering the Bathroom with Dua and Etiquette

The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated exact guidelines for personal cleanliness. Even entering the restroom was approached with remembrance of Allah and humility:

“When one of you enters the toilet, let him say: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils.’”
إِذَا دَخَلَ الْخَلَاءَ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
(Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

This simple dua before entering the bathroom reflects two core principles:

  • Always remembering Allah
  • Seeking protection from unseen harms, even in routine actions

The Prophet ﷺ would also enter with his left foot, and leave with the right, showing that even physical movements can become acts of devotion.

💡 Why It Matters

Cleanliness in Islam isn’t a small detail — it’s a prerequisite for prayer, a symbol of discipline, and a reflection of spiritual refinement.

“Purification is half of faith.”
الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ
(Sahih Muslim)

To live like the Prophet ﷺ is to value the moments that seem unimportant — and make them meaningful.

🌟 Practical Step for Today

Make this your habit today:

  1. Before entering the restroom, say: “Allahumma inni aʿudhu bika minal-khubthi wal-khabāʾith”
    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
  2. Step in with your left foot, and exit with your right.
  3. Be mindful of your personal hygiene as an act of worship, not routine.
